YESTERDAY TOMORROW AND FANTASY | Sam Scoufos

I first went to Disneyland when I was 4 years old. I got lost.

Literally in the sea of people I was separated from my parents, I have no doubt it was terrifying for them. I’ve been told it was only 5 minutes, I am sure it felt like hours to Mom and Dad. A security guard returned scared, crying me safely to my folks. Phew. A parent's greatest nightmare. But even with that experience, I have hints of memories from that first trip - actually more of a feeling really. It was wonderful. Over the next 40 years or so we would return sporadically, usually when visiting all of our family in Southern California. I went with my high school concert band, where we played part of the score to the Rocketeer (with vision). I went with my wife when we first started dating. I remember so many of these trips to the Magic Kingdom. Last year, we went for the first time in a long time with all of the family. Watching our children experience it for the first time was amazing. I decided over the course of 3 days to document Disneyland and its surroundings from a different perspective. I was drawn to how even at it’s busiest with thousands of visitors you could find pockets of quiet moments. Amongst the chaos and the cacophony lay these frames of silence carefully curated with textures, colour and an aesthetic that only the original theme park could provide.
